nothing will come of nothing

Attended a screening of Michael Grandage's King Lear last night, broadcast live from London's whitewashed and wooden Donmar Warehouse theatre. Derek Jacobi played Lear, Ron Cook was the Fool, Alec Newman as Edmund. Christopher Oram designed the play's perfectly empty set and Neil Austin's light work turned it into this stark and claustrophobic, unforgettable thing. By the time I got there, tickets had long since sold out. I stood out in the rain, searching for scalpers, like it was a rock show.

Such an excellent, excellent performance. And goddamn! Not sure how healthy it is to be at the age of Edgar, yet feel so obsessed with Lear's slow disappearing act. In any case, plenty more performances still left to see. Here's to year after year and astounding reminders of my own mortality.
