An intuitive pattern

Michigan State University physicist Dr. William M. Hartmann discussing the crooked ways in which our brains perceive sound. I pulled his quote from this article by Guy Gugliotta. It centers around psychoacoustic speaker placement mostly. Though there are moments where its author stops to marvel at our ears and the peculiar parlor tricks they perform.

Computers can, for instance, use a mathematical formula to subtract unwanted noise from sound signals, interpret someone's voice and transcribe it into text. Computers cannot, however, replicate the human ear's ability to understand a conversation in a crowded restaurant, or separate an infant's cry from a blaring television. Or identify the disembodied sound of a bowling ball rolling coolly down the lane.
